The Corn moon of October 15th and a cool north wind brought us some ducks into this 2005-2006 Alabama duck season. According to duck population reports the North American ducks that migrate should be up from previous years. Of course the weather north of us will influence the Tennessee River Valley population more than any other factor. I saw several gadwall, a few shovelers and other ducks on North Sauty Refuge Oct. 16th Sunday and Oct. 17th Monday. Duck season opened in the Dakotas and many other states along the Canadian border on October 1, 2005. AWA has had two band reports thus far on http://bandreturns.com

This mallard was release by Chris Clay at Paint Rock River Alabama
This year 2005 AWA banded and released 3,500 Frost Waterfowl Trust 4 week old mallards. It will be interesting to see how these birds move and where they will be killed this year.
This was a banner farm year with corn and soybeans being harvested now. Alabama needs a rain real bad. If we can get water, the table will be set for the November 25th Alabama duck season opening.
I would like to ask all of you to please be finding private donors for the 2006 Mallard Restoration Project, AWA will be taking orders as soon as duck season ends. As you well know with energy cost rising this will impact the price of doing business on our MRP projects. Also, the price of shipping has increased drastically and we will most likely have to have a shipping and storage increase in our seed program.
Good luck and have a safe duck season.
